Thank you so much for all the cute outfits for Weekend Buddy. I felt like it was my baby shower all over again opening the gift. Weekend Buddy will be the best dressed bear in Westchester! Thank you all for everything...

I would like to thank each and every parent as well as each and every child in my class for their dedication to spelling. Today's spelling test was a very tough one. The sounds ir/er/ur all sound the same in words so knowing which one to use takes practice...and then I added AR words into the mix to totally confuse them. I told the kids that the more they see the words and write the words, the easier it will be to know which spelling pattern to use. We did a lot of work with these sounds over the last few weeks and the results on their spelling test today simply blew me away. They all did GREAT! Thank you for practicing at home and putting the time into your child's education. This week was "Teacher" Appreciation week but please know that I appreciate YOU. Thank you for all of your continued support.
When solving application problems (word problems), we teach the kids to use the following process to help them remember the steps...
R: Read the problem D: Draw a tape diagram and LABEL it. W: Write the matching number sentence and statement. The First Grade Earth Day Concert is April 28th at 9:30am. All parents are invited back to their child’s classroom following the concert, so mark your calendars for this exciting event. The students have been practicing and are so excited to perform! We are asking that the first graders wear blue and green on that day and they will need a pair of sunglasses. Thank you so much for your support as we get ready for an awesome Earth Day Concert! Directions for a Habitat Diorama are coming home with your child today. A copy of the directions is on the Projects tab of my website. Below you will find pictures of last year's dioramas. The projects will be on display for all to see during the school science fair. Beginning this Friday, the reading tests will change slightly. Instead of students having to answer two written response questions, students will now have to answer one written response question but include many more details. We have been practicing writing paragraphs for a few months now so the kids are very familiar with writing longer pieces. The students know to begin with a topic sentence, then include 3-5 detail sentences and end with a conclusion sentence (aka "Make your teacher smile" sentence). Today you will receive a typed example as well as an example from class today of what will be expected on reading tests. We will continue to practice this at school and I will give one for homework this week so you can practice with your child at home.
Last Thursday, we tried our first Maker Space activity in the classroom. The children picked their own partners (3 per group) and set out with the goal of building the tallest tower using only marshmallows and toothpicks. They had 15 minutes to build and were encouraged to work cooperatively and to learn something. Each group presented their tower at the end and explained their work process (what their original plan was, how it changed while they worked, and what they would do differently next time.) It was a great activity and really engaged the students in thinking outside the box. All groups collectively decided that if they were to do this again, they would build a wider base made of squares first.
Here are some photos of the activity. Fun Math Website that tracks your child's individual progress!
