We completed our first writing prompt, Things I Like To Do, and the children are doing a great job going through the steps of the writing process. Tomorrow the children will be making a list of places they like to go. Please take some time to discuss recent trips and outings with your child. It would be helpful to remind them who they went with and different things they like to do there.

Today the children read the story Pam and Sam. We practiced using the strategy of finding text evidence to answer questions. The story and questions are very basic so the challenge to the students was to go back as detectives and find the page that actually told them the answer. We will practice this some more before next Friday's (Sept. 30) reading test.
Here is a sample of our work: Today your child will be coming home with a sheet that will identify some areas that need a little extra work. The sheet looks like this... Please use this information to help your child with correct letter formation as well reading and spelling their High Frequency Words from Kindergarten. Here is a fun way to practice spelling High Frequency Words. It is very easy to make at home for the specific words your child may need help with.
Today we began working in our poetry book. Each time we work on a poem we will go through the following steps:
1. Label the title 2. Label the author (sometimes it is "unknown") 3. Count the number of lines 4. Punctuation Hunt (color commas YELLOW meaning SLOW DOWN and periods/question marks/exclamation points RED meaning STOP.) 5. Listen to Mrs. Wagner read the poem while following along in their books 6. Read the poem as a whole class at least three times Here is today's poem - have your child read it for you at home! Our math workbooks have not been delivered yet so as you have seen, we have been using copies of the pages. Tonight's math homework is attached to today's classwork. This is similar to how the workbook is organized - we do the classwork (titled Problem Set) in school and the children do the HOMEWORK pages that match the lesson. Tonight's homework has numerous activities in which the directions change frequently so you will most likely have to sit with your child and guide them through each problem; this help is to be expected and should not be considered as "this is too hard for my child."
I also sent home another SPRINT. Children have one minute to do as many problems as they can. Today's SPRINT required the children to add one more to the number shown. TONIGHT's SPRINT is OPTIONAL! Have fun with it - if you want! Today I read the children my favorite book from when I was in the first grade.
Please ask your child about the book, why I liked it and what it inspired me to do as a child and as a teacher. Use the pictures below to lead the discussion. |
